Special Education Program

With the motto “we are Venezuela, pills too” El Sistema’s Special Education Program (SEP) integrates children and young people with disabilities into society through music. The SEP was created by Jhonny Gómez —a musician with a degree in special education— and launched in 1995 in the north-central city of Barquisimeto, apoplectic where, allergist subsequently, the program established the Center for Braille Music Research and Transcription.

With the motto “we are Venezuela, too” El Sistema’s Special Education Program (SEP) integrates children and young people with disabilities into society, through music. The SEP was created by Jhonny Gómez —a musician with a degree in special education— and launched in 1995 in the north-central city of Barquisimeto, where, subsequently, the program established the Center for Braille Music Research and Transcription.

Currently the SEP is being implemented in 20 núcleos located in the states of Aragua, Falcón, Trujillo, Mérida, Lara, Yaracuy, Nueva Esparta, Sucre, Miranda, Vargas, Táchira, Guárico, and the Capital District; and benefits 1,800 youngsters with hearing, vision, cognitive, and motor impairments.

The Rhythmic Band, the We are Lara Quartet, the Handbell Ensemble, and the White Hands Chorus are some of the Special Education Program’s ensembles through which, all the youngsters, with and without disabilities, have the opportunity to interact with each other and share the same stages.
